Our Story
Founder
“Aloha shirts have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Makanalani is my way of sharing that love with women who want clothing that feels effortless, joyful, and inspired by the islands.”
— Malia Lawrence
Makanalani was founded by Malia Lawrence, a Native Hawaiian designer whose lifelong love of aloha shirts inspired the brand. From family photos in the Hawaiian Islands to years spent working in fashion retail, the influence of aloha attire has always been present.
Over time, that appreciation turned into a vision: to create a modern women’s collection that honors the tradition of aloha while offering silhouettes designed specifically for women.
Makanalani was created to bring that vision to life.
Craftsmanship & Production
Most Makanalani apparel is manufactured in Los Angeles, allowing the brand to work closely with skilled local production partners and maintain high standards of craftsmanship. Accessories and select apparel pieces are produced abroad with carefully chosen manufacturing partners who share the brand’s commitment to quality.
This approach allows Makanalani to balance thoughtful production, responsible sourcing, and carefully made pieces designed to last.
The Spirit of Aloha
At its heart, Makanalani celebrates the beauty, ease, and warmth that aloha style represents. Each piece is designed to feel effortless, versatile, and timeless with clothing that can move easily from everyday moments to special occasions while carrying the spirit of the islands wherever it’s worn.
Makanalani blends island inspiration with modern silhouettes so that the feeling of aloha can travel with you, wherever you are.
The Meaning of Makanalani
The name Makanalani reflects a sense of beauty, connection, and inspiration drawn from the islands. For founder Malia Lawrence, the name represents the warmth, joy, and sense of belonging that aloha style brings to everyday life.
